When we are approached by a church or religious group, one of the first questions they usually ask is How can I tell if my Austin church stained glass windows need restoration? In this post, we’ll outline the steps one can take to conduct an inspection of the condition of the glass, when a professional should be called in, and how to raise funds for restoration projects.

How to Tell if Your Stained Glass Needs Repair/Restoration

Here are some simple steps you can take to determine the condition of your stained glass and identify signs of deterioration.

1. Step up to the glass and gently push on the window frame and a few pieces of glass. If the frame or glass moves, this is a good warning sign that the window needs repairs. Call in a professional as soon as possible.

2. Standing inside your church, position yourself next to the window and look upwards. If the glass looks like it is bulging outward or if you see that the metal bars are starting to come off, this means the window is starting to deteriorate. Conduct the same inspection from the outside.

3. Carefully examine the glass. Do the colored glass pieces look cloudy? If the glass is clear, does it look yellow or discolored? If the glass looks dirty, foggy, or is cracked in places, it may need to be cleaned or replaced by a professional.
