The Glass Itself: How Colour Gets into the Sheet
Stained glass is coloured glass — glass tinted by adding metallic salts and oxides while the batch is molten in the furnace. Cobalt produces deep blue, copper produces green and a vivid vermilion red, and gold produces wine red and violet tones. Because the colourants are part of the glass itself, the colour never peels, fades in sunlight, or washes off. That is one of the quiet superpowers of the medium, and a major reason medieval windows are still glowing eight centuries later.
There are two main ways colour is built into a sheet. “Pot metal” glass is coloured all the way through — what you see from the street is what you see from inside. “Flashed” glass fuses a thin layer of coloured glass onto a thicker layer of clear glass, giving artists a softer wash of colour and more control over highlights. Most of the panels we build combine the two, layering pot metal for bold focal areas and flashed glass for skin, sky, water, and other subtle passages. This is a useful thing to understand when you are comparing commissions, because the mix of glass types shapes both the look and the longevity of the finished work.
Joining the Pieces: Lead Came and Copper Foil
Once glass is cut and painted, it has to be held together. Two methods dominate the craft. The traditional one uses lead “came” — H-shaped and U-shaped lead strips that wrap the edge of each piece and solder at the joints. The alternative, popularised in the early twentieth century for smaller lampshade-style work, uses thin copper foil taped to the edge of each piece and soldered together.
Which method we use depends on the project. For large architectural panels — entryways, transoms, church windows — we default to lead came because it has proven itself over centuries and because thicker reinforcing cames in zinc, brass, or copper can be built into the panel to carry its own weight. For small, intricate pieces like decorative hanging glass panels or detailed cabinet inserts, copper foil can give the precision we want. The came glasswork process is well documented, and the same basic joinery still anchors most of the panels in older Denver churches today.
What Actually Decides How Long a Panel Lasts
Longevity comes down to four working parts: the glass, the joinery, the waterproofing, and how the panel is mounted.
Good glass is properly annealed — cooled at a controlled rate so internal stresses are relieved. Poorly annealed glass can crack on its own years after installation. The colourants we use are stable; modern coloured glass is fundamentally the same chemistry that has been used for centuries.
Joinery is where most premature failures start. Lead came stretches over decades, panels can bow outward under their own weight, and solder joints can fatigue. The fix is reinforcement: steel rebar, copper or brass saddle bars, and rigid perimeter frames. A well-built exterior panel should also be waterproofed. We force a soft cement or mastic between the glass and the came, which cushions the glass, locks the pieces in place, and keeps wind-driven water out of the panel.
Finally, how a panel sits in the building matters. Weep holes in the sill, ventilation gaps behind protective glazing, and isolation from incompatible materials all extend service life. When those details are handled correctly, a custom stained glass panel can easily outlast the homeowners who commissioned it.
